Februray 15, 2001 - My first training session.

My job assignment as a volunteer will be Technical Help Desk support for the computer systems. I will be working at the Ogden Ice Sheet for the Curling Events. But I may also be called upon to help in other areas.

The training was held at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. This was the first training session for the 2002 Olympics was 90 minutes in length and was attended by 1700 eager volunteers.. The training was given by Mitt Romney (head of Salt Lake Olymipc Committee (SLOC)), Kurt Besture (he wrote some of the music for the Sydney Olympics and was a volunteer there), Steve Young (head of the volunteer committe...yes, the former football player), 5 trainers, and 2 former Sydney volunteers. They lectured, showed videos and used music and song to get their messages across.

"Team 2002" the official name for the volunteers training session covered:

What is Team 2002?
Salt Lake City Bid History
The Olympic Games History
Olympic Winter Games History
Paralympics History
Organization Structure
Symbols, Emblems, Mascots, Motto
Torch & Torch Relay
Environment
2002 Cultural Olympiad
Team 2002 Process, Timeline, Motto, Rewards, Our Playbook
On-line Community

I'll briefly describe a little about each topic.

What is Team 2002? Approximately 26,000-30,000 volunteers and paid SLOC staff. There is no distinction between those that volunteer or are paid staff. As of this point we are representatives of the 2002 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games . We are the first of 3 wave of volunteers to be trained. It was a big event for SLOC and Utah, the training covered by all the Utah TV stations and newspapers. We were the HOT number one news item of the day. Utah is noted to have the most homes using computers in the US and being on-line. Proof of this was that 95% of those applying to volunteer did so on-line.
